German Unity Day 2026: Germany's Only National Holiday Falls on a Saturday
Tag der Deutschen Einheit, 3 October 2026, lands on a Saturday — and German law offers no substitute day. Why reunification is marked in October rather than November, and who actually loses a day off.
The one holiday all of Germany shares
German Unity Day, 3 October, is the only public holiday set by federal law for the whole country. Every other German holiday, from Epiphany to Reformation Day, is decided state by state, which is why Bavaria rests thirteen times a year while Berlin long made do with nine. On 3 October, uniquely, all sixteen Länder stop together.
It commemorates 3 October 1990, the day the German Democratic Republic formally acceded to the Federal Republic and forty-five years of division ended.
Why not 9 November?
The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989, and that date was the obvious emotional candidate. It was passed over deliberately: 9 November is also the anniversary of the Nazi pogroms of 1938, among other heavy turns in German history, and marking national celebration on that date was considered impossible. The legal date of unification, 3 October, carried no such weight and took the role.
2026: a Saturday, and the day is gone
In 2026, 3 October falls on a Saturday. German law knows no substitute-day mechanism; a holiday that lands on the weekend is simply absorbed. No Monday off, no compensation, nothing carried forward. For the roughly five-day-week majority, the country's single shared holiday effectively vanishes this year.
It is a recurring sore point in a calendar already stingier than it looks: Germany's holidays are date-fixed rather than Monday-fixed, so a bad year can wipe out several at once. The consolation for 2026 is thin but real: those celebrating in states where Reformation Day (31 October) or All Saints' Day (1 November) applies get their regional days on a Saturday and a Sunday too — which rather makes the point.
What still happens on the day
The official celebrations go ahead regardless of the weekday. Each year a different state hosts the central Bürgerfest, a multi-day civic festival around 3 October, and cities across the country run their own events. Shops stay closed under holiday trading laws even on the Saturday, which in practice makes the day feel like a second Sunday.
The wider picture
Germany's neighbours handle their national days differently: Austria's National Day on 26 October is a public holiday nationwide, and Switzerland's 1 August is the Swiss confederation's single federal holiday, cantons deciding everything else — an arrangement Germans would recognise instantly.
The full state-by-state calendar, including which Länder observe which regional holidays, is on our Germany holiday page. The 2027 edition brings better news: 3 October 2027 falls on a Sunday — which, under German rules, is no better at all.
