November 11, 2026: One Date, Four Holidays — Veterans Day, Remembrance, Armistice & Polish Independence

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day

At 11 a.m. on 11 November 1918, the armistice signed in a railway carriage at Compiègne ended the fighting of the First World War. More than a century later, that single timestamp still structures the second week of November across half the Western world, though almost every country has bent the date to its own history.

In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday, splitting the week cleanly in two, with no long weekend anywhere.

Who takes the day off

• France: Armistice Day is a full public holiday. Schools, banks, and offices close; the President lays a wreath at the Arc de Triomphe. France stands out for keeping both world wars' commemorations as separate holidays, 8 May and 11 November.
• Belgium: also a full public holiday, fittingly for the country where much of the Western Front ran. The Last Post still sounds at Ypres' Menin Gate at 8 p.m., as it has virtually every evening since 1928.
• Poland: the same armistice returned Poland to the map after 123 years of partition, so 11 November is National Independence Day, one of the most important dates in the Polish calendar, marked with the largest annual march in Warsaw.
• United States: Veterans Day is a federal holiday. Post offices, federal agencies, and banks close, but stock markets trade and most private employers stay open. Unlike Memorial Day, which mourns the fallen, Veterans Day honours all who served, living included.

Who doesn't

• United Kingdom: no public holiday at all. Britain's commemoration lives instead in the two-minute silence at 11 a.m. and, above all, in Remembrance Sunday, which in 2026 falls on 8 November, with the Cenotaph ceremony and poppies everywhere from mid-October. The absence of a day off is itself the British tradition.
• Canada: the in-between case. Remembrance Day is a holiday for federally regulated workers and in most provinces and territories, but notably not a general statutory day off in Ontario or Quebec, so whether an office closes depends on the province.
• Germany: 11 November is no commemoration at all; it is, of all things, the 11:11 a.m. start of Carnival season. German war remembrance happens quietly on Volkstrauertag, a Sunday later in the month.

A Wednesday year

A midweek date does commemorations no favours commercially, but arguably suits them: attendance at 11 a.m. ceremonies is one of the few calendar events that does not depend on a long weekend. For workers in France, Belgium, and Poland, the Wednesday off invites the classic bridge temptation, two leave days for a five-day break, on either side.
