One Monday, three names

Monday 12 October 2026 is doing a lot of work. North of the border it is Canadian Thanksgiving, a statutory holiday with turkey on the table. South of it, the same Monday is Columbus Day on the federal calendar, Indigenous Peoples' Day in a growing list of states and cities, and for millions of American workers, just a regular Monday.

The collision is baked in: Canada fixes Thanksgiving to the second Monday of October, and the US fixed Columbus Day to the same formula back in 1971. They have shared the date ever since.

Why Canada gives thanks in October

The short answer is latitude. Canada's harvest wraps up well before late November, and an October date has been the norm since Parliament settled it in 1957 after decades of the holiday wandering the calendar.

Canadian Thanksgiving is the quieter sibling of the American original: a family meal without the retail frenzy, no equivalent of Black Friday attached, and in a very Canadian touch, it is not even a statutory holiday everywhere. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island it is optional, and plenty of businesses there stay open.

The American Monday: a holiday in transition

Columbus Day remains one of eleven US federal holidays, so federal offices, banks, and the bond market close. But fewer than half the states still observe it as a paid state holiday, and a long list of states and major cities have renamed the day or observe Indigenous Peoples' Day alongside or instead of it. Since 2021, presidential proclamations have recognised both names on the same Monday.

The practical result is the most fragmented holiday in the American calendar: your mail will not arrive, but your office is probably open, your kids may or may not have school depending on the district, and what the day is called depends on which state line you last crossed.

• Canada: banks, government offices, and most workplaces closed (except in the three optional provinces); grocery stores vary by province
• US: post offices, federal offices, and banks closed; stock markets OPEN (the NYSE trades on Columbus Day, one of the quirks of the federal-holiday list); most private employers open
• Both countries: expect long-weekend traffic, since the shared Monday makes this a cross-border travel peak for the northeast

Planning the weekend

For Canadians this is the year's last statutory long weekend before Christmas in most provinces, which explains the cottage-country exodus. For Americans with the day off, the aligned Monday makes it one of the few weekends where Toronto, Montreal, and New England all move at once, and border crossings and flights price accordingly.
