Singapore National Day 2026: A Sunday Holiday That Still Delivers a Long Weekend
National Day falls on Sunday, 9 August 2026 — and unlike many countries, Singapore hands back the lost day: Monday 10 August is a public holiday in lieu. The parade, the rules, and the three-day weekend.
When is Singapore's National Day 2026?
Sunday, 9 August 2026. And here is the part that matters for your calendar: because it falls on a Sunday, Monday 10 August becomes a public holiday in lieu. Singapore's Employment Act makes the substitution automatic, no annual gazette drama required. The result is a clean three-day weekend, 8 to 10 August.
That puts Singapore in the generous minority. In much of Europe, a Sunday holiday simply evaporates; in Singapore, the day always comes back.
What the day marks
National Day commemorates 9 August 1965, the day Singapore separated from Malaysia and became an independent republic, reluctantly at the time. Lee Kuan Yew's tearful televised announcement of the separation remains one of the most replayed moments in the country's history. Sixty-one years on, the anniversary is the emotional centre of the Singaporean calendar.
The Parade
The National Day Parade, universally shortened to NDP, is the year's biggest event: military and civilian contingents, the Red Lions parachute display, fighter jet flypasts, and a fireworks finale over Marina Bay. Tickets are free but balloted months in advance, and oversubscribed every single year.
If you did not win the ballot, you are in good company. Vantage points around Marina Bay fill hours early, and the preceding weekends offer a quieter option: the full-dress rehearsals stage the same flypasts and fireworks without the crowds of the day itself.
What's open on 9-10 August
Singapore does not really close. Malls, restaurants, and attractions run through the holiday, many with National Day promotions. The Monday in lieu closes banks, offices, and schools; the MRT runs normal weekend-style schedules. The one practical warning: road closures around the Padang and Marina Bay on parade day are extensive, and ride-hailing prices around the fireworks reflect it.
Planning around it
The 8-10 August weekend is the last public holiday break before a long gap: Singapore's next holiday after National Day arrives with Deepavali in the final stretch of the year. For a short getaway, the three-day window covers Bali, Bangkok, Penang, or Vietnam comfortably, which is why regional flights out of Changi price up for that weekend well in advance. Book in July or pay for it.
