UK Christmas Bank Holidays 2026: Why Monday 28 December Is a Day Off

The short version

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. Boxing Day falls on Saturday the 26th, and because a bank holiday cannot be spent on a weekend, the UK rolls it forward: Monday 28 December becomes a substitute bank holiday.

Put together: Friday 25, Saturday 26, Sunday 27, Monday 28. A four-day Christmas weekend, no annual leave required.

How the substitute rule works

British bank holidays that collide with a weekend are not lost; they are moved by royal proclamation to the next available working day. It is the same mechanism that shuffles the Christmas holidays around every few years and the reason the gov.uk bank holiday list sometimes shows dates that look nothing like the holiday's name.

2026 needs only one substitution, for Boxing Day. Christmas Day itself sits safely on the Friday. Compare that with the rougher years: when Christmas falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, both days have to be re-housed and the "Christmas bank holidays" drift all the way to the 27th and 28th.

The bigger prize: nine days for the price of three

Look at what surrounds the four-day block. New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday. Take just the three working days between them, Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December, and the run stretches from Friday 25 December to Sunday 3 January: ten consecutive days off for three days of leave.

This is the best Christmas-to-New-Year leave ratio the UK calendar has offered in several years, and the kind of alignment office calendars fill up around by early autumn. If your workplace runs a leave-booking scramble, this is the week it will be fought over.

Scotland does even better

Scotland adds 2 January as a bank holiday. In 2027 that falls on a Saturday, which triggers its own substitute arrangements north of the border, but the practical effect stands: Scottish workers stretch the new-year end of the break further than everyone else, as usual.

What's open over the long weekend

• Christmas Day: near-total shutdown, including almost all rail services — the one day the network truly stops
• Boxing Day (Saturday): the sales open, but trains run a reduced holiday timetable and engineering works traditionally blanket the network between Christmas and New Year
• Monday 28: banks, offices, and schools closed; large retailers open with sale hours
