When is Labor Day 2026?

Monday, 7 September 2026. Labor Day always falls on the first Monday of September, which makes it the rare American holiday that never burns on a weekend. You get the three-day break every single year, no fine print.

It also lands late this year. September 7 is the latest possible date in the cycle, so summer 2026 gets an extra week of unofficial runway before the pools close.

Why September and not May?

Most of the world honors workers on May 1. The United States deliberately does not, and the reason is a piece of hard history.

The first Labor Day parade marched through New York City on 5 September 1882, organized by the city's Central Labor Union. Twelve years later, the 1894 Pullman railway strike ended with federal troops in Chicago and dozens of workers dead. President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into federal law six days after the strike collapsed. September was chosen partly because May 1 already belonged to more radical labor movements, and the government wanted distance from them. The date has not moved since.

Canada shares the September date, and its claim is arguably older: Toronto printers marched for the nine-hour workday back in 1872, a decade before New York's parade.

What's open and closed on Labor Day

Labor Day is one of eleven US federal holidays, so the pattern is familiar:

• Closed: banks, post offices, government offices, most schools (many districts start the year the following day), the bond market
• Open: most major retailers, grocery chains, restaurants, and famously the Labor Day sales, one of the biggest discount weekends of the retail year
• Reduced: public transit usually runs on a Sunday schedule

The stock market closes for the day, which makes the following Tuesday one of the heavier trading days of early autumn.

The unofficial end of summer

Culturally, Labor Day is a boundary marker. Beach towns hold their last big weekend, white clothing supposedly goes back in the closet (a rule almost nobody enforces anymore, but everybody still mentions), college football's opening weekends bracket the holiday, and the school year begins in earnest. Travel data tells the same story year after year: Labor Day Monday is one of the busiest air travel days of the season, so if you are flying home that evening, book the earlier flight.

Planning around it

Labor Day opens a strangely holiday-poor stretch of the American calendar. After 7 September, the next federal holiday is Columbus Day on 12 October, and for most private-sector workers who do not get that one, the real gap runs all the way to Thanksgiving on 26 November. Eleven weeks. If you are rationing vacation days, attaching leave to the Labor Day weekend is the last cheap long break of the year.
