When is India's Independence Day 2026?

Saturday, 15 August 2026. The date never moves: it anchors to the midnight hour of 15 August 1947, when British rule ended and Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the "Tryst with Destiny" speech to the Constituent Assembly.

2026 marks 79 years since that night. You will still see it called the 80th Independence Day in official communications, because India counts the first celebration in 1947 as number one. Both numbers are correct; they just count different things.

A Saturday holiday, and what that means in India

India does not observe substitute days. A gazetted holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday is simply celebrated on the day, with no compensating Monday off. In 2026 that stings less than it sounds: government offices already close on Saturdays, but private companies working six-day weeks lose one of the year's three national holidays to the weekend.

The other two national holidays, Republic Day on 26 January and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, land on a Monday and a Friday in 2026, so both deliver proper long weekends. Independence Day is the odd one out this year.

How the day is celebrated

The centrepiece is the Prime Minister's flag hoisting at the Red Fort in Delhi, followed by an address to the nation that traditionally sets out the government's agenda. A 21-gun salute accompanies the tricolour going up. Schools and housing societies across the country hold their own flag ceremonies in the morning.

Two smaller traditions are worth knowing. Delhi's skies fill with kites through the afternoon, a habit with roots in protest-era symbolism. And 15 August is a dry day: the sale of alcohol is prohibited nationwide, which catches out more than a few visitors.

What's open and closed

• Closed: government offices, banks, post offices, schools, stock markets (BSE and NSE observe the holiday; in 2026 they are closed Saturday anyway)
• Open: most restaurants and tourist sites, though security around central Delhi tightens for days before the Red Fort ceremony
• No alcohol sales anywhere, including hotel bars in most states

The neighbours' dates
