August Bank Holiday 2026: Why England and Scotland Take Different Mondays

When is the August bank holiday 2026?

Depends where you are standing. England, Wales, and Northern Ireland close on Monday 31 August 2026, the last Monday of the month. Scotland already took its summer bank holiday on Monday 3 August, the first Monday.

Same country, same holiday name, four weeks apart. It catches out UK-wide companies every single year, usually in the form of a half-empty London office wondering why the Edinburgh team is not answering.

Why the two dates exist

The original Bank Holidays Act of 1871, drafted by the banker and scientist Sir John Lubbock, gave everyone the first Monday of August. For a century that held. Then a late-1960s experiment moved the English holiday toward the end of the month to stretch the summer season, and the 1971 Banking and Financial Dealings Act made the split permanent: last Monday for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, first Monday for Scotland.

Scotland kept the older date partly because its traditional trades fortnights, the summer shutdowns of Glasgow and other industrial cities, already sat in late July and early August. A late-August holiday would have landed after everyone was back at work.

The last stop before Christmas

Here is the number that makes the August bank holiday matter more than its history: after 31 August, workers in England and Wales have no public holiday until Christmas Day. That is a sixteen-week gap, the longest dry stretch in the British calendar.

Northern Ireland gets no relief either. Scotland does slightly better thanks to St Andrew's Day on 30 November, though it is not a universal day off in practice.

So the late-summer Monday carries real weight. It is the weekend of the Notting Hill Carnival in London, Europe's largest street festival, of festival season's last hurrah, and of the year's final cheap opportunity to turn four days of annual leave into a nine-day break. Take the four days before the holiday and you are off from Saturday 22 August to Sunday 30 August with the Monday as a bonus.

What's open on 31 August

Bank holiday trading rules are gentler than Christmas rules, so most things stay open:

• Large supermarkets typically run reduced Sunday-style hours
• Banks and post offices close, which is the whole point of the name
• Trains often run amended timetables, and late August is a favourite window for engineering works, so check before travelling
• Pubs, restaurants, and attractions treat it as one of the busiest days of the year

Not a holiday in Ireland

One more border quirk: the Republic of Ireland's August public holiday falls on the first Monday, 3 August 2026, matching Scotland rather than England. Ireland then adds an October bank holiday that Britain lacks, which softens the autumn gap considerably.
