Silver Week 2026: Japan's Rare 5-Day Holiday Returns in September

What is Silver Week?

Silver Week is the autumn cousin of Japan's famous Golden Week: a cluster of September national holidays that, in lucky years, chain together into a full week off. The name plays on both the silver of autumn and, affectionately, on Respect for the Aged Day, the holiday at its heart.

Unlike Golden Week, which arrives reliably every spring, a true Silver Week is rare. It only forms when the calendar aligns just right, and 2026 is one of those years. The last full alignments were 2009 and 2015; workers have been waiting over a decade for the next one.

The 2026 dates: 19-23 September

• Saturday 19 September: weekend
• Sunday 20 September: weekend
• Monday 21 September: Respect for the Aged Day (Keiro no Hi)
• Tuesday 22 September: Citizens' Holiday, the bridge day
• Wednesday 23 September: Autumnal Equinox Day (Shubun no Hi)

Five consecutive days off with zero paid leave spent. Take the Thursday and Friday after, and eight and a half days of vacation cost just two days of leave.

The sandwich rule that makes it possible

The bridge is not a coincidence; it is written into Japanese law. The Public Holiday Law states that any single working day squeezed between two national holidays automatically becomes a holiday itself, the kokumin no kyujitsu, or Citizens' Holiday.

Respect for the Aged Day is fixed to the third Monday of September. Autumnal Equinox Day follows the actual astronomical equinox, drifting between 22 and 23 September from year to year. Only when the equinox lands on a Wednesday in a year where the third Monday falls on the 21st does the Tuesday get sandwiched, and the five-day week snaps into place. That is precisely the 2026 configuration.

What the two holidays mean

Respect for the Aged Day honours Japan's elderly, a national value with real demographic weight in the world's oldest society. Families visit grandparents, municipalities honour centenarians, and media mark the year's count of citizens over 100, a number that has risen for decades straight.

Autumnal Equinox Day has older roots: it coincides with Ohigan, the Buddhist week when families clean and visit ancestral graves. The equinox as a state holiday dates to 1948, but the practice it absorbed is centuries older.

If you are planning travel: move early

Silver Week 2015 set domestic travel records, and 2026 is already shaping up the same way. Expect shinkansen reservations to open and fill fast, domestic flights and ryokan to peak-price the full five days, and popular spots like Kyoto to run at Golden Week density. International routes out of Tokyo and Osaka fill early too; a five-day window puts Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Singapore comfortably in range for Japanese travellers.
