What Is Assumption Day? Meaning, Date & Where 15 August 2026 Is a Holiday
Assumption Day falls on Saturday, 15 August 2026. What the feast means, why Italy calls it Ferragosto, and which of the 41 observing countries actually get a day off this year.
What is Assumption Day?
Assumption Day, 15 August, marks the Catholic and Orthodox belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Catholic doctrine says body and soul together; Orthodox tradition speaks of her "Dormition," a falling asleep. Either way, it is one of the oldest Marian feasts in Christianity, celebrated since at least the sixth century.
For a religious feast, its footprint on the modern calendar is unusually large. By our count, 41 countries treat 15 August as an official public holiday, from France and Italy to Cameroon, Chile, and Côte d'Ivoire. That reach follows the old map of Catholic Europe and its former colonies, which is why you get the day off in Dakar but not in Copenhagen.
When is Assumption Day 2026?
Saturday, 15 August 2026. And the weekday matters more than you might think.
In most of the countries that observe it, a public holiday falling on a Saturday is simply absorbed by the weekend. France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium: no substitute day, nothing moved. Workers there lose the day off this year. The next genuinely favourable run comes in 2027, when 15 August lands on a Sunday (still lost in most places) and then 2028, a Tuesday, which brings back the beloved bridge-day weekend.
Poland is the exception worth knowing about. Polish labour law requires employers to grant a day off in lieu when a public holiday falls on a Saturday, so Polish employees come out of August 2026 whole. If you work for a Polish company, ask about your dzień wolny.
Ferragosto: Italy's mid-August shutdown
In Italy the day has a second identity that predates Christianity entirely. Ferragosto comes from Feriae Augusti, the rest days Emperor Augustus established in 18 BCE after the summer harvest. The church later attached the Assumption feast to the same date, and the two have travelled together ever since.
Modern Ferragosto is less a feast day than a national pause. Cities empty, coastal towns triple in population, and an enormous share of Italian businesses close not just for the day but for the week or two around it. If you have ever tried to get something delivered in Milan in mid-August, you know. Booking travel in Italy for the 13th through 17th of August means peak prices and packed trains, Saturday holiday or not.
Where 15 August 2026 is a public holiday
A few notable observers, with links to the full national calendars:
- France: Assomption, one of eleven national holidays
- Italy: Ferragosto, the anchor of the summer break
- Spain: Asunción, national but with regional substitution choices
- Austria and Poland: both observe it, with Poland also marking Armed Forces Day the same date
- Chile and Colombia: the largest Latin American observers, though Colombia moves it to the following Monday under its Emiliani Law, so Colombians celebrate on 17 August 2026 and get a long weekend after all
- Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire: part of a broad band of West and Central African countries that kept the feast after independence
Germany is a curious case: 15 August is a public holiday only in Saarland and in the Catholic-majority municipalities of Bavaria, so most Germans work while their neighbours in Austria rest.
Is it a holiday in the US or UK?
No. Neither the United States nor the United Kingdom observes Assumption Day as a public holiday, and it passes largely unnoticed outside Catholic parishes. Ireland, despite its Catholic history, dropped it as a public holiday long ago. The August bank holiday that British workers do get falls at the end of the month instead.
The bottom line for 2026
If your work touches France, Italy, Spain, or Latin America, plan around the week of 15 August: even though the holiday itself burns on a Saturday this year, the surrounding vacation season does not shrink, and Italy in particular still effectively shuts down. Colombians get their Monday. Poles get a day in lieu. Everyone else gets a regular weekend with fuller beaches.
